With busier roads and hotter weather across the province, your Alberta RCMP is sharing tips for traffic and water safety this Labour Day long weekend.
Last Labour Day long weekend, the Alberta RCMP issued 990 speeding tickets, 35 distracted driving tickets, and 55 tickets for not wearing a seatbelt. Additionally, 92 drug or alcohol-impaired drivers were removed from the roads.
To help make the roadways safe for everyone this long weekend, keep the following tips in mind:
- Never drive tired or impaired.
- Make sure your vehicle and equipment are in good working order.
- Ensure your trailer is properly connected and within acceptable weight limits of your combined vehicle weight rating.
- Leave with plenty of time to get to your destination. If you’re running late, prioritize getting there safer, not faster.
- Eliminate distractions by placing your mobile phone in your glove box or out of reach.
- Follow posted speed limits and always drive according to conditions.
- Make sure you and your passengers buckle up.
To help stay safe on the water this weekend, follow the below tips:
- Wear a lifejacket while boating, doing water sports, and if you can’t swim.
- Never operate a boat when tired or impaired.
- Be aware of currents and strong waters.
- Never swim alone; always bring a buddy, and don’t overestimate your swimming abilities.
- Keep children within sight and reach when in and around bodies of water.
- Always have a spotter in the boat when towing someone during water sports.
“With hot weather expected this long weekend, roads and bodies of water will be busy,” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “By following road and water safety tips, we can help ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the weekend safely.”
