Vermilion RCMP issue shelter in place – Update #2

On Aug. 23, 2025, at approximately 7:15 p.m., Vermilion RCMP responded to a report of a male with a gunshot wound. Officers attended the scene, and it was determined that the suspect had fled the scene on foot and he was in possession of a firearm.

RCMP initiated a shelter in place for the immediate area. At 21:15, the suspect was located at a local residence and was arrested.

A 49-year-old individual, a resident of Vermilion, has been charged with the following:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Discharge firearm with intent
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Pointing a firearm

After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, the individual was remanded into custody to appear in Albert Court of Justice in Vegreville, Alta., on Sept. 8, 2025.

The victim received nonlife threatening injuries and is recovering. RCMP would like to send a huge thank you to all responding emergency personnel and members of the community who assisted in this incident.

Vermilion RCMP is cancelling the shelter in place. The suspect is in custody.

Vermilion RCMP issue shelter in place

Vermilion RCMP is issuing a shelter in place in Vermilion while they respond to a firearms call. A suspect was seen fleeing the scene with a long barrel firearm. The shelter in place encompasses the following area:

•            51A Street to 50 Street

•            47 Avenue to 43 Avenue

Please stay in your residences and do not open the door for anyone. Please refrain from posting photos of responding officers on social media.  

We understand how situations such as this can make a community feel uneasy, but rest assured, your Alberta RCMP is working tirelessly to locate the suspect. We ask that the public remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or tips to the Vermilion RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
