As the new school year begins, thousands of students, parents, and teachers are heading back to school. Coquitlam RCMP wants to remind motorists and pedestrians that road safety is a shared responsibility.
“We know it can be a bit of a shift for drivers and pedestrians after a two-month break,” said Staff Sergeant Mark McCutcheon, Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services Commander. “Our officers and volunteers will be at schools to remind everyone about road safety and to make sure school zone speed limits are being followed.”
Throughout the school year, officers will be in the community, actively enforcing speed limits and other Motor Vehicle Act offenses in school zones. Just a quick reminder, school zone speed limits are 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, on school days and playground zones are in effect every day from dawn until dusk.
Good road safety starts at home. It's important for parents to talk to their kids about staying safe on the roads. Kids also learn a lot just by watching, so be a good role model. Show them safe habits by practicing road safety yourself, whether you're walking, biking, or driving.
Pedestrian Safety Tips:
- Always cross at marked crosswalks and follow the signals.
- Before you step out, make sure all cars have stopped in every lane.
- Try to make eye contact with drivers so you know they see you.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing so you're easy to spot, especially in low light.
- Stay alert, take out your earbuds and put your phone away so you can focus on your surroundings.
Driver Safety Tips:
- Slow down, school zone speed limits are in effect on school days.
- Give yourself a bit of extra time if you're driving through a school zone. Mornings and afternoons can get busy.
- Stay focused, put your electronic devices away and keep your eyes on the road.
- Watch out for kids walking or biking to school.
- When you're dropping students off at school, ensure that it is done in a safe manner. Don’t block traffic and let the passengers out on the sidewalk side."
