On May 12, 2026, Trail and Greater District RCMP were called to assist Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue with a recreational vehicle fire in the area of 7 Mile Dam. The fire was reported as a fully engulfed RV that had been parked in a remote location, and at the time it was unknown whether anyone was inside.

Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue crews attended, extinguished the fire, and prevented it from spreading to the surrounding forested area. During their examination of the scene, responders located two deceased individuals within the fire debris.

Trail and Greater District RCMP attended and secured the scene, initiating an investigation to determine the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the fire. It has since been determined that the fire is not suspicious in nature and no foul play has been identified. The investigation has now been turned over to the BC Coroners Service and is supported by the Trail and Greater District RCMP.

“This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, RCMP spokesperson. “We also want to acknowledge the efforts of the fire crews who prevented further damage in what could have become a larger wildfire situation.”
