The Depot Division Ensign

RCMP Depot Division marks its 140th anniversary officially on November 1, 2025.

Since 1885, Depot Division has been the heart of RCMP basic training - preparing generations of Mounties to serve communities across Canada. The idea of having one unique training facility for the RCMP started when Assistant Commissioner A.G. Irvine visited Dublin, Ireland, in 1880 to study the Royal Irish Constabulary. He was so impressed by their permanent training centre, called Depot of Instruction, that he recommended creating something similar in Canada.

To start this ambitious project, 640 acres of land was provided in Regina, Saskatchewan. Prefabricated buildings were shipped from Ontario and Quebec to create what is now called the RCMP Academy.

There have been many changes over the decades, some more visible than others. Each change has helped shape Depot into the modern RCMP Academy. There have been milestones, challenges, learning and moments of pride. Today is about recognizing the past, appreciating the present, and looking ahead with optimism for the future of training new RCMP constables.

To mark the division’s 140th anniversary, a commemorative flag raising ceremony was held today at Regina City Hall. Representatives from the provincial government, the City of Regina and RCMP Academy gathered at the Queen Elizabeth II Courtyard to celebrate the connection between Regina and the home of the RCMP.

Attendees gathered to watch the Depot ensign be raised. This flag consists of crossed cavalry swords and a lamp of learning. The swords stand for the RCMP’s cavalry lineage, and the skills needed to be a police officer. The lamp of learning symbolizes knowledge and wisdom. The flag will remain flying for the duration of the weekend.
