Federal Arctic Unit arrests Quebec traveler for drug trafficking and liquor-related offences

The RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Federal Arctic Unit (FAU) in Nunavut has charged a Montreal resident for drug trafficking and the unlawful sale of liquor.
On Feb. 6, 2025, the FAU arrested the accused during a layover en route to Clyde River, Nvt., at the Iqaluit International Airport and his luggage was intercepted. One ounce of cocaine and 33 60-ounce bottles of vodka were seized from the traveler’s luggage.
Iakov Verdibekov, 45, a resident of Montreal, Que., was arrested and charged with:
- Possession for the purpose of trafficking contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; and,
- Unlawful sale of liquor contrary to section 84(b) of the Nunavut Liquor Act.
Verdibekov is scheduled to appear in the Nunavut Court of Justice on Feb. 07, 2025.
This investigation was carried out in collaboration with the Nunavut RCMP.
