Burin Peninsula RCMP arrests steamroller operator for impaired driving, refusing breath samples

A 61-year-old man working as a heavy equipment operator in an active construction zone was arrested by Burin Peninsula RCMP after he refused to provide breath samples as part of an impaired operation investigation.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, police responded to a report from a concerned citizen who believed they had seen the operator of an asphalt roller consuming alcohol in the the parking lot of Marystown Mall.

The investigation at the scene confirmed the presence of alcohol and a construction worker who showed signs of alcohol impairment. The 61-year-old Torbay man was provided with a demand for a roadside screening test. He refused to provide a breath sample to police, and was arrested for impaired refusal and transported to the Burin Peninsula RCMP detachment.

The 61-year-old Torbay man faces charges of failure or refusal to comply with a demand, impaired operation of a conveyance and two counts of failure to comply with the conditions of his Release Order, in relation to a previous impaired related charges in St. John’s.

He is expected to make his first appearance in Grand Bank Provincial Court on November 12, 2025.

The investigation is ongoing. Occupational Health and Safety/Workplace NL has been notified of the incident.
