A youth was arrested by Springdale RCMP on Friday after they made online threats of violence towards students and staff of Indian River High School in Springdale.
Just before 8:30 p.m. on Thursday September 18, Springdale RCMP responded to a report that a youth had made a threat of violence towards students and staff using an online social media instant message platform.
Springdale RCMP immediately launched an investigation. Police worked with school officials to ensure everyone’s safety in school on Friday.
The 17-year-old youth was safely arrested at a home on Friday for uttering threats and was released on conditions. They will appear in provincial court at a later date.
The investigation continues.
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador thanks the school staff and those that reported these threats for their action and their shared commitment to the safety and security of both the school community and the wider local community. Students are reminded to think carefully before posting content that could be perceived as a threat, as it could result in criminal consequences.
