On July 29, 2025, at approximately 12:00 p.m, the Pangnirtung RCMP received a report that a person had been slashed with a knife.

Police quickly located the suspect and was arrested. During the apprehension and subsequent processing, the male suspect assaulted the arresting police officer. The suspect was taken into custody and was held for a bail hearing which was scheduled for July 31, 2025.

The victim (23-year-old male) was treated at the local health center for non-life-threatening injuries and later released from medical care.

“This appears to be a random isolated incident, the victim and the accused did not know each other” said Sergeant Scott Kirychuk of the Pangnirtung RCMP.

The Pangnirtung RCMP have charged Joanasie Qumuaqtuq (age 26) with:

  • Assault with a Weapon, Section 267(a) C.C
  • Assaulting a Peace Officer, Section 270(1) C.C
  • Fail to comply with Probation Order, Section 733.1(1) C.C
