Two people have been arrested after police seized a quantity of crack-cocaine during a traffic stop on Sunday.
On August 17th at approximately 5:29 p.m. officers on patrol of the community initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle to conduct a sobriety check. Upon making contact with the driver, open cannabis products were observed in the vehicle and the occupants were arrested for Cannabis Act offences.
A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of approximately 286 grams of suspected crack-cocaine.
As a result, 19-year-old Brock Mercredi of Yellowknife and a 16-year-old male youth who cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were both charged with:
• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
They appeared before a Justice of the Peace and were remanded into custody.
The RCMP notes that while this may seem like a small seizure in some places, this quantity of drugs represents significant harm in a community the size of Behchokǫ̀.
Anyone with information on this matter or the illicit drug trade in the community is asked to contact the Behchokǫ̀ RCMP at 867-392-1111 or Crime Stoppers at https://p3ptips.com
