Charges laid after Ulukhaktok RCMP respond to firearms complaint

One person was safely taken into custody after officers responded to a firearms complaint near Ulukhaktok on Tuesday.

On August 26th at approximately 5:17 p.m. Ulukhaktok RCMP received a report that a person had been discharging a firearm towards an occupied cabin just outside of the community.

Officers attended the location and were able to safely evacuate the lone occupant of the cabin.
Shortly after, the suspect who was found to be intoxicated, surrendered himself to police without incident. No injuries were reported.

A loaded rifle was recovered from the scene.

43-year-old Adam Ekpakohak of Ulukhaktok was charged with:

• Careless use of a firearm, contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code

He appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was released on a release order.
