Youth suspect arrested after Yellowknife RCMP respond to stabbing

A youth was taken into custody after Yellowknife officers responded to a reported stabbing in the community on Monday.

At approximately 6:53 a.m. on September 8th, Yellowknife detachment received a call that a 15-year-old person was threatening to kill a person at a residence in Sisson’s Court and was in possession of a knife.

Officers attended the residence where the suspect surrendered themselves and was arrested without incident shortly after police arrival. Police then entered the residence and found a 7-year-old with apparent knife wounds. They were taken to hospital by ambulance and are reported to be in stable condition.
A search warrant was obtained an executed on the residence and evidence, including a knife, was recovered.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be identified as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will be charged with:

• Aggravated assault, contrary to section 268(2) of the Criminal Code
• Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88(1) of the Criminal Code
• Uttering threats against a person, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

They were later released into the care of the Department of Child and Family Services subject to the conditions of an undertaking.
Yellowknife detachment’s General Investigation Section has taken carriage of the investigation, which remains ongoing with support from the Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Services.
