Every year in October, police services across Canada participate in Operation Impact, a public awareness and enforcement campaign focusing on impaired driving, aggressive and distracted driving as well the use of seatbelts and child car seats. These are the main causes of death and injury on Canadian roadways.
This year, the campaign will run from October 10th to October 13th in conjunction with the Thanksgiving weekend.
The public can expect to see an increased police presence and more frequent check stops on roadways as officers place increased focus on traffic safety in support of this initiative. Police will also be on the lookout for motor vehicle equipment violations that pose hazards.
Motorists are reminded that any traffic stop can involve mandatory alcohol screening, in which drivers will be required to provide a breath sample to police.
The vast majority of collisions are not “accidents” but rather the result of a decision made by a driver. This year, make sure your decisions behind the wheel are responsible.
