Another school year is about to start, and the Yukon RCMP will be increasing patrols in school zones and near bus stops.
Drivers, please take extra care on the roads. Reminder that school zones are 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days.
Expect more pedestrian and cycling traffic and that school buses will be making frequent stops. When you are driving along a street, undivided highway or roadway in any direction, you must stop when you approach a stopped school bus with it’s red lights flashing. Do not start moving until the red lights have stopped flashing and the bus begins to move.
Parents, guardians and care givers, it is important to remind young children to remember to stop and look both ways, and make sure that cars are stopping and it is safe, before crossing the road.
“My best advise is to drive according to the speed limit and stay alert. Even an extra kilometre over the limit can affect a vehicle’s stopping distance. A moment’s distraction can mean the difference between a near miss and a tragedy. Slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.” - Constable Devon Slade, Collision Analyst, Yukon RCMP Traffic Services
The RCMP extend its best wishes for a safe and successful school year to all students, families and staff.
