Background:
On July 7, 2025, at approximately 8:31 p.m., the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) responded to an assault in progress at a residence in the area of 194th Street and 66A Avenue, Surrey.
Upon arrival, SPOSU officers encountered a man with a weapon. An interaction occurred and shots were fired by police. Despite the best efforts of the BC Emergency Health Services (EHS), the man died at scene. Upon entry to the residence, officers located a deceased woman inside.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was notified and are investigating the police actions in this incident.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in and has assumed conduct of the concurrent investigation into the woman’s death.
Update:
IHIT continues to work in close partnership with RCMP SPOSU, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service to advance the investigation.
While the investigation is in the early stages, investigators believe this was an isolated incident involving the deceased woman and the alleged suspect who was shot by police. There are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing risk to the public.
The deceased woman and man were a couple in their 60’s who lived together at the residence. Initial evidence indicates police were responding to a physical assault in progress stemming from intimate-partner violence.
“This was not the outcome that anyone had hoped for,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “We extend our thoughts to the family members of the deceased, first responders and witnesses who have been impacted by this incident.”
Anyone seeking support is encouraged to reach out to their local Victim Services. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or via email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
