Background:
On May 18, 2026, Squamish RCMP received a missing person report after Stewart McLean had not been seen since May 15, 2026. It was reported that he was last seen at his residence in Lions Bay.
Squamish RCMP initiated an investigation and, through investigative efforts, uncovered evidence that led investigators to believe Mr. McLean was the victim of a homicide.
On May 20, IHIT deployed and assumed conduct of the investigation. Squamish RCMP is working closely with IHIT and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) to advance the investigation.
Update:
From the onset of the missing persons investigation, police and partners have been searching for Mr. McLean. As a result of the search efforts, the remains of Mr. McLean were located in the Lions Bay area.
IHIT would like to thank the Squamish RCMP, the Integrated Police Dog Services (IPDS), the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), and Lions Bay Search and Rescue for their assistance in these efforts.
IHIT is working in close partnership with the BC Coroners Service and IFIS to understand the circumstances that led to his death. At this stage, IHIT believes this to be an isolated incident.
“As the investigation continues to unfold, homicide investigators are working to collect and analyze evidence, review CCTV footage and conduct interviews to build a timeline of Mr. McLean’s activities prior to May 15, 2026,” says Cpl. Esther Tupper of IHIT. “We are pursuing all available leads as we work to find answers for the family, friends and loved ones of Mr. McLean.”
