IHIT File # 2026-321

Background:

On March 23, 2026, at approximately 11:11 p.m., Abbotsford Police Patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Whatcom Road Park & Ride, which hosted a large encampment.

Upon arrival, officers secured the area and located a man suffering from injuries. The victim was transported to hospital; however, despite medical efforts, he did not survive.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) deployed and worked in close partnership with the Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Service (FIS), and the BC Coroners Services to advance this investigation.

Update:

Over the past three months, IHIT investigators carefully examined forensic findings and witness accounts to piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

On June 13, 2026, IHIT investigators arrested 39-year-old James Jared Yake of Abbotsford, and he was subsequently charged with manslaughter with a firearm in relation to the homicide of 69-year-old Wayne Versfelt of Abbotsford.

Investigators believe this was an isolated incident involving the victim and the accused who were known to each other.

“Anytime there is gun violence, it can leave residents feeling shaken and concerned for their safety, and it is particularly troubling and impactful when it occurs around the most vulnerable members of our community,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.

“IHIT investigators remained committed to uncovering the truth, and it is our hope that the laying of this charge represents a step toward closure for the victim’s loved ones and the community.”

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.
