IHIT File # 2022-1296
Background:
On October 17, 2022, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Burnaby RCMP located the bodies of 31-year-old Kiesha Garie and 30-year-old Umair Kasim inside a vehicle in the 900-block of Alpha Avenue in Burnaby.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in to investigate and worked in close partnership with Burnaby RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service to advance the investigation.
Update:
Over the past four years, IHIT investigators worked diligently to piece together the circumstances surrounding the homicides. Through the collection and analysis of evidence, investigators established key information and developed a timeline leading up to the discovery of the victims.
On October 16, 2026, IHIT investigators arrested 27-year-old Mohammed Arif Ansari in connection with the homicides of Ms. Garie and Mr. Kasim. The BC Prosecution Service approved two counts of second-degree murder and one count of indignity to human remains against Mr. Ansari.
Investigators believe the homicides were targeted and that the parties involved were known to one another.
“This was a complex investigation that demanded years of dedicated work by investigators who were committed to finding answers,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
“Through the persistent pursuit of multiple investigative avenues and the meticulous examination of evidence, this case has reached a significant milestone with the approval of charges. We recognize the profound impact these homicides have had on the victims’ families and our thoughts remain with them as the judicial process moves forward.”
As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.
