March was distracted driving month in BC, which led Mission RCMP to team-up with the Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway police, Road Safety BC, and volunteers from Mission’s Crime Prevention Office, to help crackdown on distracted drivers.
Officers targeted select locations in Mission during the month, and also increased overall enforcement of distracted drivers throughout our community. Over 150 drivers received tickets for using an electronic device while driving, which carries a considerable financial penalty:
- A first-time distracted driving ticket costs $368 (with a $25 reduction if paid within 30 days);
- The driver also receives a Driver Penalty Point Premium from ICBC, of $214, meaning the total financial penalty is $582;
- The costs escalate significantly for repeat offenders within a short timeframe;
- If you receive multiple convictions for certain high-risk offences (like distracted driving) within three years, you may also be billed an annual Driver Risk Premium separate from your insurance;
- Graduated Licensing Program (GLP): Drivers with an "L" or "N" license face immediate intervention—including possible driving prohibitions of up to six months—after their first offence.
A lot of people use their phones while driving, and a lot of people get away with it. However, just keep in mind that every time you send even a quick text, there’s a chance that doing so will result in hundreds of dollars of fines, or worse – a serious collision. Leave the phone alone and focus on the road. Your fellow citizens and your wallet will thank you!
