The shows include a foot-drill display performed by cadets wearing scarlet tunics, a cannon drill and the ceremonial lowering of the Canadian flag at sunset.

The RCMP Academy is pleased to share that there will be four Sunset Ceremonies this July! Mark your calendars, the shows will take place on:

  • July 1
  • July 8
  • July 15
  • July 22

The Sunset Ceremonies are a beloved summer tradition attracting residents and visitors alike. The shows include a foot-drill display performed by cadets wearing scarlet tunics, a cannon drill and the ceremonial lowering of the Canadian flag at sunset. Once again, each show has special dedication and VIPs in attendance. There are also some special guests lined up, including Safety Bear. This year is especially exciting, as it is the 140th anniversary of Depot Division.

All Sunset Ceremonies are free of charge. Public access to Depot is available via the RCMP Heritage Centre entrance at 5907 Dewdney Avenue. Gates will open at 5:30 PM. Ceremonies start promptly at 6:00 PM on Parade Square.

To enjoy the full experience there are a few things guests need to know:

  • The RCMP Academy is an active training site and a secure facility. Access is controlled. Personal items may be searched on entry.
  • This event potentially includes live cannon and rifle fire. We recommend guests bring hearing protection, especially for young children.
  • Please do not bring your pets. Service dogs are welcome.
  • Please bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Seating is not provided.
  • We encourage guests with mobility needs to arrive early and park closest to the south end of the Heritage Centre parking lot.
  • The RCMP Heritage Centre will run a trolley for those with mobility issues.
  • These events are weather dependent. In case of inclement weather, updates will be posted on RCMP Depot’s website and social media accounts.

Quotes

I am pleased to welcome everyone to the RCMP Training Academy for the Sunset Ceremonies.  These events, which have taken place for more than 60 years, allow us to showcase our traditions and express thanks to the community who have supported us since Depot came into existence 140 years ago.

Chief Superintendent Mike Lokken, Commanding Officer, Depot Division

During Sunset Ceremonies, guests will see a dismounted cavalry drill and artillery demonstration. These drills demonstrate teamwork and are also a nod to RCMP traditions, the present accomplishments and the future. We look forward to sharing these with you at the Sunset Ceremonies.

Sergeant Major Christina Wilkins, Sergeant Major, Depot Division
