Trigger lock and cable lock to prevent firearms from being fired.

The RCMP are asking Nunavut residents to secure their firearms. Residents are asked to:

  • Unload and lock their firearms
  • Store the ammunition separately or lock it up.
  • Ammunition can be stored in the same locked container as the firearm.
  • Attach a secure locking device, such as trigger locks or cable locks (or remove the bolt) so the firearm cannot be fired.
  • Lock the firearm in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into.
  • You may visit your local RCMP detachment to get free trigger locks.

The Chief Firearms Office for Nunavut is available to provide trigger locks, demonstration of how to use trigger locks, host community information sessions beyond the safety training on understanding the safe storage of firearms for those individuals that may not have a need for a firearms licence.  The CFO recognizes many individuals are still around firearms during hunting trips but may not be the owner or user but still should have knowledge on the safe handling and storage of firearms to reduce the misuse or risk to any individual.
