Have a safe and happy Halloween

Halloween can be a fun time for kids of all ages. The Bella Bella RCMP would like you to plan for a fun and safe time by using these safety tips:

Making your costume:

• Make sure your costume is visible. Adding reflective tape to your costume will increase visibility. 
• If possible carry flashlights and glow sticks. They will help keep you visible to motorists. 
• If you plan to wear a mask, make sure you can see properly while wearing it. Perhaps face paint could be used instead. 
• Ensure your costume is made of flame-retardant material.
• Make sure your costume fits well to avoid falls or stumbles.

Be street smart:

• Plan your route for trick-or-treating and be aware of any hazards; such as poorly-lit areas.
• If your children are trick-or-treating without an adult, ensure that they go with a buddy and discuss the route ahead of time to avoid getting lost.
• Know where you can find help if needed. Such as the police office, the fire station, or any other well-known public place.
• Stay on the sidewalks. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left-hand side of the street facing traffic.
• Don’t zig zag across the road. Trick or Treat on one side, then safely cross to the other side.
• Never enter a house. Only accept treats at the front door.

Motorists stay safe and drive with care:

• If possible, avoid driving in residential neighbourhoods.
• Slow down and be extra cautious. 
• With the excitement of Halloween, trick-or-treaters may forget to look both ways before crossing the street.
• Ensure that your costume does not interfere with the safe operation of the motor vehicle. Costumes should not restrict movement, impede vision or prevent anyone in the vehicle from buckling up.
• Ensure that your vehicle lights are.
• Do not drive impaired.
