In January, Burnaby RCMP Traffic Services focused their efforts on school zones throughout the city as students returned to school after the holidays amid darker conditions and winter weather.
Burnaby Traffic Services conducted twenty-two operations at various schools in Burnaby with the following results:
- 102 speeding violation tickets
- 50 other violation offences
“The public and particularly drivers are well aware, school zones in Burnaby have a posted speed limit of 30 kms per hour,” said Sergeant Gary Johal of Burnaby RCMP Traffic Services. “It is staggering that we continue to have drivers disobey the speed limit.”
One of the 102 drivers wasn’t just speeding, they were found driving over 40 km over the speed limit, which is considered excessive. This driver lost their license and their vehicle, as both were impounded for 7 days.
On January 16, a woman was stopped for driving 61 km in an elementary school zone. When the officer stopped her, she had her teenager in the passenger seat, whom she was driving to school. She told the officer that she was late getting her daughter to school and was running late for work. This led to her speeding through one school zone to get to the other.
“It is every driver’s responsibility to ensure that they know and abide by the traffic laws,” says Sergeant Gary Johal. “In Burnaby, the school zone speed limit of 30km is in effect from 7 am to 10 pm.”
Another focus of this month’s campaign was education. Officers handed out reflectors for students to put on their backpack and shared information on how to walk to and from school safely and the importance of being visible. In February the traffic section will focus on intersection enforcement and education.
