A new style of police cruiser will be hitting the streets in Burnaby, as the RCMP detachment tests out a fully electric patrol vehicle as part of a national pilot project.
The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV arrived in February and will be tested by Burnaby Traffic Services in the course of their regular duties around the city. Members will be providing feedback on the vehicle’s performance in operational situations to help inform the federal project. The new addition to Burnaby’s fleet is fully equipped and outfitted for police use and has the same markings as a traditional cruiser – without the need to visit the gas pumps.
“We’re pleased to support this federal pilot project to help determine the suitability of electric vehicles in police operations, as part of a larger national commitment to move towards more zero-emissions vehicles in the RCMP fleet,” said Burnaby RCMP Officer in Charge Chief Superintendent Bill Parmar. “This is an exciting opportunity for our detachment to contribute to the force’s shift towards greener technologies, by providing real-world testing to ensure the best fit for officers on patrol.”
The addition of an electric vehicle to the Burnaby RCMP fleet is fitting, as the city is already a leader in adopting measures to reduce carbon emissions as part of its overall Energy Strategy.
“We are fully supportive of our RCMP partners as they explore the greater use of electric vehicles for police work, and it’s great to see one of those vehicles being tested on Burnaby roads,” said Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley. “As a city, we are moving towards transitioning our municipal fleet to low or zero emission vehicles and working in tandem on these kinds of advancements will help us create a greener, cleaner future for our community.”
The electric vehicle is currently on loan to Burnaby for the duration of the pilot, which does not have a set end date. For more information on the Greening Government Operations Fleets program, visit Natural Resources Canada - Federal vehicles and fleets.
