Week of February 23 to March 1, 2026

Our officers were again kept busy this past week responding to a variety of calls for service. Here’s what kept officers busy:

  • Total calls for service: 827
  • Assaults: 27
  • Residential Break and Enters: 6
  • Break and Enter to Business: 3
  • Theft of Auto: 4
  • Impaired Driving: 5
  • Weapons Seized: 24

A concerned neighbour reported that two men were allegedly forcing entry into a nearby home on the north side of town. Frontline officers attended immediately and safely took both men into police custody. Officers conducted a check of the residence and located a large quantity of suspected illicit drugs and illegal cigarettes. It was learned that the men were allowed to be at the residence, the matter remains under investigation.

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Charles Street while using the crosswalk. The pedestrian was taken to hospital with injuries, and the driver, who is cooperating with police, stayed on scene.  Impairment is not a factor and the police continue to investigate.

A man was reported to be swinging a baseball bat in an aggressive manner on Yale Road.  The man was located by police nearby and arrested. After claiming to be a police officer, and giving three false names, police were able to confirm the man’s identity and discovered he had a warrant for his arrest. The man was held in custody for court.  The baseball bat, along with drug paraphernalia, was seized and destroyed.

In a one hour period, two unrelated reports were made of a firearm being stolen from a locked vehicle. One theft occurred in Sardis, while the other theft occurred in the downtown area.  This serves as a continued reminder to not leave valuables unattended in your vehicle.

Staff at a local clothing store observed a man steal clothes and flee on foot. Police located and arrested the man shortly afterward. The stolen property was recovered and returned to the store. The suspect was released on conditions to not attend the store and given an upcoming court date. The man returned to the store a few hours later and stole further items before fleeing again. The man will now be looking at additional charges. It appears he was truly committed to building a coordinated wardrobe.

A female was reported to have assaulted an innocent passerby downtown and damaging several vehicles in the area. The police responded and were able to locate the woman, who is know to police and appeared intoxicated.  The woman was held in police custody and will be appearing in court at a later date for the assault and property damage.

We responded to a report from a passenger on a public bus who believed another rider was in possession of a black handgun. Officers conducted a roadside stop of the bus, and all passengers were safely evacuated while the investigation was carried out. It was determined that the suspected firearm was actually a lighter designed to resemble a black pistol. No threats were made, and no one was injured during the incident.

Over the weekend numerous proactive investigations were generated by our frontline officers, including:

  • 5 investigations under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • 4 impaired drivers removed from the roadway
  • 7 licensed premises checks
  • 23 curfew compliance checks, 10 individuals were found to be non-compliant
