Coquitlam RCMP and its Operational Communication Centre (OCC) want to remind the public of different ways to report crime and suspicious activities and when to use each option.

“As police officers, we rely on the public to be our eyes and ears,” said Media Relation Officer Acting Sergeant George Han. “When a crime occurs, it is important that public report the incident in a timely manner.”

Non-emergency Services

Non-emergency Services should be used where an offence has already been committed and there is no suspect present or there is no immediate risk to the public. Examples of when to use Non-emergency Services includes:

  • Found graffiti or damage to public/ private properties
  • Lost items
  • Driving complaints when you have lost sight of the vehicle
  • Theft that occurred overnight

To make a non-emergency report about an incident that occurred in Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Village of Belcarra, Village of Anmore and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation, the public can:

Note: Crime reports can not be made via e-mail, text message or social media.

Emergency Services

Emergency Services, or 9-1-1, should be used where there is a need for an immediate response from the police. Example of when to call 9-1-1 includes:

  • When someone’s life is in danger or there is an immediate threat to public safety
  • When a crime is in progress: a fight, a break and enter or violent occurrence involving a weapon
  • After serious crime (such as robbery or assault) just occurred and the suspect is still nearby
  • When there has been a motor vehicle accident with significant injuries
  • When you are witnessing an erratic or possibly impaired driver
