Coquitlam RCMP participates in province wide “Light Up the Province” enforcement campaign to stop impaired driving

On December 6, 2025, Coquitlam RCMP officers and volunteers, in partnership with BC Highway Patrol, Port Moody Police Department, BC Coroners Service, and ICBC, conducted sobriety checkpoints in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam as part of the provincial initiative to prevent impaired driving.

During the operation, officers checked over 5,000 vehicles at two locations, resulting in:

  • 2 90-day driving prohibitions
  • 2 3-day driving prohibitions
  • 2 24-hour driving prohibitions
  • 26 violation tickets

Officers observed that many drivers were making responsible choices by using ride-share services, taxis, or relying on a sober friend or family member.

“These stats showed that over 99% of the public are choosing safe ways to get home,” said Staff Sergeant Mark McCutcheon, Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services Commander. “Our officers will be out 24/7 looking for impaired drivers, and we hope this positive trend continues throughout the year.”

If you suspect a driver is impaired, pull over when safe to do so, and call 911 and provide the license plate of the vehicle, direction of travel and last known direction of travel.
