Coquitlam RCMP is inviting community members to attend the first session in our new Community Safety Talk Series: Protecting Those with Dementia, taking place on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
The Community Safety Talk Series is designed to provide residents with practical, easy‑to‑understand safety information to help families and caregivers support individuals living with dementia. This presentation will focus on increasing dementia awareness from a policing perspective and offering guidance to families, caregivers, and the wider community on how to keep their loved ones safe. The session will also place particular emphasis on prevention strategies and guidance around what to do if a person living with dementia goes missing.
This presentation will include:
- What to do if a loved one goes missing and when to call 911
- What to expect when you contact police, including the information officers may request
- Prevention tips to help reduce the risk of wandering
- Insights from Coquitlam RCMP’s Missing Person Coordinator
This free event is open to everyone including: caregivers, family members, neighbours, and anyone interested in learning more about dementia and personal safety planning.
“We’re inviting family members and caregivers of people facing dementia to join us for our upcoming Community Safety Series: Protecting Those with Dementia,” says Coquitlam RCMP Media Relations Officer, Sergeant Adriana O’Malley. “As police, we understand the unique safety risks that can arise when caring for someone with dementia. One of the most concerning situations can be when a loved one becomes lost or goes missing. That is why we are sharing preventative strategies, as well as guidance on what to do if a person with dementia goes missing.”
