Elk Valley RCMP respond to snowmobile rider caught in avalanche

On February 17, 2026, the Elk Valley RCMP were advised of an emergency device activation in a remote location in the Morrissey area near Fernie, BC. Initial information indicated that a man who had been snowmobiling in the area had been caught in an avalanche.
Front line officers along with Fernie Search and Rescue responded, but due to time of day and the fact that the area was identified as a high hazard avalanche area, immediate efforts could not be made to locate the man.
On February 18, 2026, Fernie Search and Rescue members were able to recover the body of the man who was confirmed to have died because of the avalanche.
The man was wearing weather and activity appropriate gear along with avalanche safety equipment.
Elk Valley RCMP wish to express our condolences to the family and loved ones during this difficult situation.
