BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of incident in Fort St. John

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Fort St. John where a person sustained life-threatening injuries.  

On Sunday, March 29, 2026, at approximately 3:15 a.m., Fort St. John RCMP stopped a vehicle near 86 Street and 97 avenue as an occupant of the vehicle was believed to have outstanding arrest warrants. An individual exited the vehicle reportedly armed with a weapon.  An ensuing interaction between the officer and suspect resulted in the officer discharging their firearm.

The suspect was transported to local hospital with serious life-threatening inquiries. No physical injuries were sustained by responding officers. 

The IIO BC was notified and are attending the scene to investigate police actions in this incident. The area was cordoned off to support the investigation.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
