On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the British Columbia Highway Patrol (BCHP), in partnership with ICBC and the Kelowna City RCMP Traffic Unit, successfully hosted the inaugural Motorcycle Skills Day at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) campus. The event marked a significant milestone in promoting motorcycle safety and rider education across the region.

Approximately 40 riders participated, which featured a series of challenging cone patterns designed to simulate real-world riding scenarios. These exercises allowed riders to test and refine their skills in areas such as maneuvering, braking, and obstacle avoidance—all under the guidance of experienced motorcycle officers.

“The goal of the Skills Day is to promote motorcycle safety while encouraging riders to practice techniques they can apply during everyday riding,” said Sgt. Kyle Ushock, with the Kelowna Municipal Traffic Unit. “It was encouraging to see participants of all skill levels, from seasoned veterans to those who had recently passed their ICBC road tests.”

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. The event fostered a positive and collaborative atmosphere, strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the riding community. Alongside practical, hands-on training, attendees had the chance to engage in meaningful conversations about motorcycle safety, riding strategies, and the importance of ongoing skill development.

Given the success of the motorcycle skills day in the Okanagan, organizers have already begun planning a follow-up event anticipated for the spring of 2026 and will continue to promote safe riding practices throughout British Columbia
