As the first week of school has come and gone, the Kelowna RCMP is once again reminding motorists to slow down while driving in school zones.

The Kelowna Municipal Traffic Unit and the RCMP Speed Watch program has been on location in several different school zone areas of the city since classes resumed last Tuesday. During the first week of the school year officers issued 59 speeding tickets, including one to a driver who was caught going nearly 40 km/hr over the posted speed limit, while also using a cell phone. The Speed Watch program has also been monitoring around school zones checking over 600 vehicles in 2 days, with 15% still driving over the posted speed limit and two drivers going 41 km’s over the posted speed limit.

“We want to remind drivers that school zones are in effect, and police will continue to be out in full force,” says Cpl. Allison Konsmo, Media Relations Officer with the Kelowna RCMP. “The first week back is always one of the busiest times and drivers are urged to slow down and stay alert especially during pick-up and drop-off times.”

School zones around the city of Kelowna are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on school days and the posted speed limit is 30 km/hr.
