With Halloween just around the corner, the Kelowna RCMP is reminding everyone to make safety a priority for you and your little ones on this spooktacular night. Whether you're trick-or-treating, driving, or celebrating at home, here are some important tips to ensure a fun and safe night for all:

For those trick-or-treating

  • Haunt in style: select costumes that fit well that are not long or flowing, which can be a tripping hazard or easily catch fire. Choose face paint over masks which can obstruct vision and dress for the weather,
  • Be boo-tifully bright: wear bright or light-coloured costumes or add reflective tape, carry flashlights or glow sticks when walking,
  • Mind the flames: remind your little monsters to stay away from open flames, including candles in jack-o'-lanterns and fireworks,
  • Stay together: youngsters should be accompanied by an adult, and older kids should stick to their werewolf pack and familiar areas for trick-or-treating,
  • Wander wisely: walk on the sidewalk whenever possible, if there are none, walk facing traffic and stay alert.

For those driving

  • Creep it slow: drive cautiously in residential areas, especially between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. when trick-or-treaters are most active,
  • Don’t get spooked: watch for little goblins and ghouls crossing the street unexpectedly or darting out in between vehicles,
  • Avoid distractions: put away your phone, stay focused on the road while haunting and pay attention to your surroundings.

For homeowners

  • Clear creepy clutter: remove obstacles from walkways and steps to prevent trips and falls,
  • Use safe decor: avoid open flames and ensure electrical decorations are in spell-tacular condition,
  • Treats without tricks: make sure that all candy and treats are wrapped and sealed properly, mark candy that has allergens or offer non-food type treats.

The RCMP wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Halloween. Let’s work together to make this spooky season safe for all.
