Email requesting money- unfortunate fraud

A report of a fraud was received by the Kitimat RCMP on April 24th. A victim attended the Kitimat RCMP detachment and stated they had received an email that they thought was from their boss. The email requested Apple gift cards as a part of a ‘surprise employee recognition’ plan. The fraudster then switched the chat to a chatting app and managed to convince the victim to send photos of Apple gift cards and the activation codes, costing a few thousand dollars. As more pressure to send more gift cards was received, the victim realized it was a scam, they stopped chatting with the fraudster and reported the incident. The investigating officer attempted to trace the IP address and found that it was from overseas. The victim was provided education and tips of online frauds. If you fall victim to a fraud or scam, ensure to report it to your local police station and visit the Canadian Anti-fraud website to make a report and stay educated on the current scams and frauds.  (2026-1327)

Thwarted mobile cellular device attempted fraud

The Kitimat RCMP received a report of a new type of fraud for the Kitimat area on April 25th. It was reported that a local delivery company had delivered a package that the complainant was not expecting. Within minutes of the package being delivered, the complainant received a phone call asking if they wanted to keep the package and was advised it was a new mobile cellular device. The caller advised they worked for a well-known telecommunications company. The complainant right away replied that they did not want to keep it and was provided a return address, but once again it was suspicious as the return address was not the same address the package originally came from. The would-be victim did all the correct steps, contacted the mobility carrier to report the suspicious use of their company and confirmed it was not a usual business practice for them. They ensured all their banking information was protected and opted to return the package directly to the originating address. (2026-1348)

Hit and run reported

On April 27th at 10:46 am, the Kitimat RCMP received a report for a hit and run that the vehicles owner had noticed. It was stated that the vehicle was parked in a parking lot on the 500 block of Mountainview square. While parked and unattended, it appeared that another vehicle had bumped into the driver’s vehicle, causing damage. The investigating officer canvassed the area for cctv. The vehicle owner was provided the file number for insurance purposes. (2026-1376)
