Hit and run results in charge
A report of a hit and run that had occurred on the 200 block of City Centre was received by the Kitimat RCMP on May 14th at 12:19 pm. The investigating officer attended and was shown damages to a vehicle that had occurred while the vehicle was parked and unoccupied. Luckily, a witness had stayed on scene who was able to provide enough information regarding the suspect vehicle to allow the officer to locate it. The vehicle was located and the driver was identified. The driver was issued a violation ticket for fail to remain at scene. (2026-1638)
Spring weather kicks off checkstop season
As the weather has changed into spring mode, the officers of the Kitimat RCMP have started to increase their checkstop presence. On May 15th from 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm, two officers conducted a checkstop at the entrance to Kitamaat Village. Approximately 100 vehicles were checked with drivers being checked for insurance and driver’s licenses. Two violation tickets were issued for no insurance and 2 notice and orders were issued for studded tires still being on the vehicle. Checkstops are also regularly utilized to ensure loads are secured. (2026-1654)
Busy lost and found days in Kitimat
May 19th to May 20th was a busy 2 days for the Kitimat RCMP with lost and found items of all descriptions, from licence plates to electronic devices and yard care equipment. Four reports of found property were created. The most common lost items reported during this period was license plates. Of the four found property items, two have been successfully reunited with their owners (an ipad and a wallet). The Kitimat RCMP still have, in their custody, a found cellular phone and a leaf blower. If you can identify either of these items, please contact the Kitimat RCMP detachment and if you can identify the item, we would like to return it to you. Did you know, the Kitimat RCMP keeps all items turned into the detachment for 90 days before it gets destroyed.
Amazing day of celebrating at the museum
The Kitimat RCMP would like to express their appreciation to the Kitimat Museum & Archives for hosting the RCMP Family Day on Saturday, May 23rd. It was an amazing way to spend a Saturday and not only enjoy the families that came down but also celebrate the 153rd anniversary of the force. The museum employees did a fantastic job planning for the day and entertaining everyone. The displays and activities were very educational and enjoyable. Thank you again for everything you do!
Vessel and fishing checks
On May 24th, the Kitimat RCMP took to the sea and made patrols along the Douglas Channel and into the Gardner Canal. The officers were watching for vessel safety and ensuring fishing regulations were being followed. Several crab traps were located, and the buoys were correctly marked and identifiable. The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind all boaters to ensure they have the correct safety equipment are familiar with all fishing regulations for the activities they are partaking in. (2026-1788)
Online scam costs local a loss of money
On May 26th, at 9:52 am, a Kitimat resident attended the Kitimat detachment to report a case of fraud that occurred online a few days prior. The victim had entered their contact information on a cryptocurrency Facebook advertisement which sent them a link to a "Division Capital" website. The victim then received a call asking them to provide their banking information. They unfortunately gave their debit card information over the phone resulting in a sum of money being taken out of their bank account. When a request for a refund was made, the amount was not returned as advertised. Please educate yourself and report any scams you encounter to the Canadian Anti-fraud centre online of by calling 1-888-495-8501.(2026-1809)
