The RCMP have arrested a woman who has since been charged with manslaughter following the death of a newborn infant.
On December 27, 2023, an unresponsive baby was delivered at a private residence in Ladysmith. Despite life-saving efforts from BC Emergency Health Services (BC EHS) and subsequent palliative care, the infant died on January 6, 2024.
The Vancouver Island District General Investigation Section (ID GIS) provided assistance and took over a complex investigation which involved the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and the BC Coroners Service.
Through the course of the investigation, the woman was identified as 77-year-old Gloria Lemay. Investigators believe Ms. Lemay’s involvement in the birth process led to the child's injuries and eventual death. A warrant was issued for Ms. Lemay on January 7, 2025 and she was arrested later the same day. She has been charged with manslaughter.
As this matter is now before the courts, no further details can be shared at this time.
