On Sunday, April 13th 2025, Merritt RCMP were called by a local elderly man who had been out enjoying an afternoon ride on his dirtbike when he crashed into the ditch and was not able to get up. The man said he rode up  a forest service road close to town, fell, and then could not get back up and that his bike was stuck.

In speaking with the man, officers were able to determine the road he journeyed up that afternoon and happened to locate two young men at the start of the road. When the officers told them both what had occurred, without hesitation, one of the young men jumped on his dirtbike and was eager to assist.

After his first attempt didn't yield the elderly man, he returned to where the officers were. He and the officers spoke to the lightly injured man who gave further directions. Within half an hour of departing the second time, Merritt's local young hero and the elderly man, returned on their dirtbikes, together.

"When police originally arrived on scene, this young man from Merritt was under zero obligation to assist anyone. He made sure he had sufficient gas, kickstarted his bike and he was off to go rescue this elderly man who had crashed. The Merritt RCMP, and that elderly gentleman are extremely grateful for this young man's service to his community." says Cst. Blake Chursinoff of the Merritt RCMP.

The young man who completed the rescue, wished to remain anonymous - which in a way makes this all the more delightful.
