With schools back in session this week in Mission, school speed zones are in effect once again.
Here’s a reminder of what’s required:
- If you see a school zone sign – such as the one pictured along Stave Lake Street – it means that on every school day, from 8 am to 5 pm, drivers are required to slow to 30 km/hr. The school zone ends when drivers pass the school zone sign on the other side of the school zone. School zones are clearly identifiable because the signs specifically say
school days
- If you see a playground zone sign – such as the one pictured on Murray Street – it means that 365 days a year, you must slow to 30 km/hr from dawn until dusk. If a yellow playground zone sign does not have the black and white speed limit below, then it simply cautions drivers to be alert, but does not require them to slow down
- If you see a stop sign…stop! Unlike school zones and playground zones, there are no specific limits on when a stop sign applies – it’s always in force! With children rushing to get to class, or zooming around with their friends after school, please ensure you take the time to come to a complete stop and have a thorough look in both directions before proceeding.
Your Mission RCMP will be focussing on school zones during back-to-school season. Think about what school zones or playground zones you regularly travel through, and please remember to slow down.
For drivers who travel along Cedar Street near Cherry Avenue, note that a new playground zone is being added along Cedar Street, so keep an eye out for the signs. In addition to targeting anyone speeding through school and playground zones, officers will also be watching for any drivers using a cell phone in those areas.
For parents – please remind your kids (young and not-so-young!) to look both ways before crossing the street, to cross at marked crosswalks or intersections, and to ensure they are not looking at their phone while crossing. Road safety and pedestrian safety go hand-in-hand, and it’s important to always be alert.
Roads all around Mission will be busier now that people are back to school and back to work after summer holidays, so leave yourself lots of extra time to navigate the busy roadways. Leaving the house a few minutes earlier will help you to concentrate on the traffic and pedestrians around you, instead of focussing on trying to make the next light, or rolling through a stop sign. We’ll see you out there Mission!
