Around 3 pm on March 1, a Mission RCMP officer was on patrol in the area of Stave Lake Street and Dewdney Trunk Road, when he saw a green Kawasaki dirtbike riding along the street. As it had no license plate, the officer turned around to pull it over, in order to determine whether it was insured. The biker made a quick turn onto Stave Lake Street, but turned back around, drove back toward the officer, then sped through a nearby gas station, nearly hitting a cyclist, and drove off. Due to the dangerous driving behaviour and the rider clearly having no intention of stopping, the officer stopped and did not pursue it. A few minutes later, while the officer was still parked in the same area, the dirtbike drove back into the area and raced through the gas station parking lot again, nearly hitting a pedestrian, before speeding off again. A short time later, a customer at the station reported that a dirt-bike rider had pulled up and demanded that the man put some gas into the dirt-bike. If you recognize the bike and rider in the attached photo, please call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161, file 26-2657.
A Loss Prevention Officer from a grocery store in Mission called police on the afternoon of March 10, to report that a known shoplifter was inside the store, loading up a cart of items, and he believed he was likely going to run out an emergency exit with the items. A Mission RCMP officer went to the back door, and as he did, the man exited with a large amount of stolen goods. The officer told the man he was under arrest, to which the man replied, “no I’m not”, and ran back into the store. The officer chased after the man and caught up with him inside the store, assuring him that he was, in fact, under arrest. Store employees confirmed that the items the man had attempted to steal were valued at over $1,000. A theft charge is being recommended against the 35-year-old.
Around 11:00 pm on March 10, the Mission Fire and Rescue Service requested assistance from Mission RCMP at a property on Powell Street, in the northern part of Mission. The fire department was on scene for a shed on fire, but they reported that a male on the property was intoxicated and interfering with their firefighting efforts. Police attended and spoke with the 26-year-old man, who continued to interfere with the work the firefighters were trying to do. Police arrested the man and held him in custody for the night to sober up.
While patrolling a mall parking lot on London Avenue around 1:00 am on March 13, an officer spotted a red Chevrolet Cavalier stopped with the engine running, and one male in the driver’s seat; however, what really caught the officer’s attention was another male – the passenger – standing nearby and urinating against a building. The officer spoke with both males, and saw open cans of liquor in the passenger footwell. The driver also had an odour of liquor on his breath, and was issued a breath demand. He failed two Approved Screening Device tests, and the 19-year-old driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Mission RCMP responded to three collisions linked to impaired drivers last week. Around 11:55 pm on March 12, police were called to a single-vehicle crash on Lougheed Highway near Coleman Street. A highway maintenance vehicle happened to be driving by, and helped divert traffic around the crash until police arrived. A black Mazda 3 had collided with a concrete barrier on the south side of the highway. The 32-year-old male driver exhibited signs of impairment, and failed two roadside screening device tests. He was prohibited from driving for 90 days, and his car was impounded for 30 days. Then on March 15, shortly before 9:30 pm, a witness reported that a grey Honda Civic had crashed into a median along London Avenue hard enough to deploy airbags in the vehicle. The witness offered to help the female driver, but she declined and drove away. A Mission RCMP officer located the smashed car driving nearby and pulled it over. The 18-year-old female driver showed signs of impairment, and registered a “Warn” reading on a roadside screening device, leading to a 3-day driving prohibition and a vehicle impound. About half an hour later, the driver of a black Acura TSX tried to turn left from Dewdney Trunk Road onto Tunbridge Avenue, but instead drove into the ditch. The 43-year-old female driver failed a roadside screening test and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, 30-day vehicle impound, and a 1-night stay in a jail cell.
Around 12:45 pm on March 13, two men were involved in an attempted theft of a catalytic convertor from a vehicle parked outside a business on Glasgow Avenue. The men pulled up in a black GMC Terrain, with a damaged front grill. The passenger scrambled underneath a parked vehicle and began cutting off the catalytic convertor, but fled without actually removing it. The driver was described as a South Asian male wearing a backwards hat. Anyone who sees a matching vehicle, or who has had their catalytic convertor stolen recently from a vehicle in Mission should call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161, file 26-3171.
