Calls of interest:
First responders attended the intersection of Wren Street and 7th Avenue April 7 around 4:30 pm, after a 17-year-old girl riding her bike was struck by a vehicle. Witnesses reported that the girl was crossing eastbound across Wren Street at the crosswalk, and that the pedestrian-activated warning lights were flashing, when she was hit by a white 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee which was turning left from 7th Avenue onto Wren Street. The driver of the Jeep remained at scene and cooperated with the investigation. The girl was transported to hospital and fortunately did not suffer any serious injuries. The Jeep driver was issued a ticket for failing to yield during a left turn.
Paramedics notified Mission RCMP after they were called to a report of a vehicle that had apparently been involved in a collision on Dewdney Trunk Road north of Mill Pond. Police arrived to find a blue Nissan Pathfinder pulled over on the side of the road with its airbags deployed and extensive damage, with the driver unresponsive inside. The 48-year-old male driver from Mission was removed from the vehicle and regained consciousness, and did not have any obvious injuries. He said that he didn’t know what had caused the damage to his vehicle. Based on the driver’s symptoms, the officer believed he was under the influence of drugs, and the man was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. Because he was taken to hospital for medical assessment, the officer issued a blood demand, and medical staff took samples of his blood for police to send for lab analysis of any drugs in his system. Anyone who has information about this collision should call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161, file 26-4331.
Around noon on April 8, Mission RCMP were alerted to a possible impaired driver, which drove through Mission and eventually parked on Wharton Place. Officers attended and found a 54-year-old man still in the driver’s seat, with the engine running. Due to the man’s symptoms being consistent with him being impaired by drugs, an officer arrested him for impaired driving. He was transported to the Mission RCMP detachment, where he performed a series of tests and provided a urine sample for lab analysis. Based on the outcome of those results, the man could face a lengthy driving prohibition or criminal charges.
A few hours later, another possible impaired driver was reported to Mission RCMP – this one parked in the parking lot of a liquor store. Officers attended and found the vehicle still parked there, with a 54-year-old man in the driver’s seat. Upon speaking with the man, he refused to provide a driver’s license, saying that he didn’t need a license to drive, because is was not a “legal fiction”, and that he doesn’t drive – he only “travels”. The man also had an odour of liquor on his breath and was required to provide a breath sample into an Approved Screening Device, but refused, saying “I am not a legal fiction to provide a sample to you.” Due to the driver’s refusal to confirm his identity as required by the Motor Vehicle Act, he was arrested for obstructing a peace officer and taken to Mission RCMP, where he was held in custody until police were able to confirm his identity. The man was found not to have a valid driver’s license, and was also issued a 90-day driving prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impound.
On the evening of April 9, a man aboard a Seadoo in Stave Lake experienced engine trouble, and became stranded in the middle of the lake. He could not connect with a cell network, but was able to reach a friend of his via satellite. That friend then notified Mission RCMP, and also posted the incident on a Facebook page. An officer attended Stave Lake, and found that a Good Samaritan who had seen the Facebook post had arrived to launch his own boat to help. The mariner welcomed police aboard his boat, and they headed out into the lake, eventually finding the stranded Seadoo rider and helping him back to shore. Fortunately the Seadoo rider was uninjured, and was thankful for the assistance.
Two vehicles were stolen from the Mission area on the night of April 9-10: A yellow Honda CBR 600 motorcycle was stolen from outside a residence on 3rd Avenue west of Stave Lake Street; On the same night, a black 12-foot long “PJ” enclosed utility trailer was stolen from a property on Hillcrest Avenue. Anyone with information about either of these thefts should call Mission RCMP, 604-826-7161, files 26-4427 and 26-4439.
