Calls of interest:

On the afternoon of July 6, police were called after a man smashed a vehicle window with a wrench on 10th Avenue near Grand Street.  Mission RCMP attended and located a man matching the suspect description nearby. He exhibited erratic behaviour and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.  As such, he was arrested for mischief and held in custody to ensure he did not commit further offences.

An officer on patrol in the area of Lougheed Highway and Haig Street during the nighttime hours of July 8 saw a drug deal between two people in a vehicle, and a pedestrian.  One of the males in the vehicle was a known offender, with existing court conditions.  The officer arrested the passenger for breaching his conditions, and a search of him and the vehicle located numerous packages of a drug believed to be methamphetamine, packaged for street-sale, as well as a switch-blade knife.  The man was also subsequently arrested for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

On the afternoon of July 9, an officer in the parking lot of a mall along London Avenue was flagged down by a security guard, who pointed to a man that had just stolen a considerable amount of merchandise from a store.  The officer went after the man, who attempted to flee into some bushes nearby, however the officer quickly caught up with the man and arrested him.  The officer confirmed that the man was in possession of two bags of stolen goods.  The 36-year-old, who has a criminal record with prior theft convictions and has other pending charges, was released after the store did not want to support charges against the man.  He went on to steal from another store the next day, then was taken into custody on an warrant the day after that.

A burnt green Ford Explorer pickup was found while Mission RCMP were conducting proactive patrols of the False Creek Forest Service Road on July 10.  The vehicle was stolen from a residence in Abbotsford on July 6. Anyone with information about this matter should call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161, file 2026-9022.

An air ambulance had to be called in after a serious collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle around 4 pm on July 11.  Mission RCMP attended the crash location, on Lougheed Highway just west of Dewdney Trunk Road, near Hatzic.  A black Dodge Durango that had been travelling eastbound on Lougheed Highway started to turn left into the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant, when it struck a motorcycle rider travelling westbound on Lougheed Highway.  The rider was projected over his handlebars, and sustained injuries that were believed to be serious but non-life threatening.  He was airlifted to hospital.  Any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police are asked to call Mission RCMP, file 26-9100.

A Mission resident recently received a scam email intended to appear as being from an RCMP officer in Alberta.  The email claimed to be from a Sergeant, and included a link for a Summons that was to be served upon the recipient.  At first glance, the email address looked to be from the RCMP, but the recipient looked closer and noted that it was actually from a Gmail account (which the RCMP does not use).  Anyone who receives an email or a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer can call their local detachment to ask for confirmation, if they have any doubts as to the authenticity of the contact.

On the lighter side:

If you are driving a vehicle and have something on top of your vehicle, or something sticking out of the trunk, or something in the back of your pickup bed, it’s your responsibility to ensure it is properly secured, and will not fly out or fly off.  Now, sometimes people put a bungee cord on, or maybe even a tie-down strap, thinking that will be sufficient.  However, if after doing that, there’s still a good chance that your item will fly off if you take a corner too fast, or if the wind catches it on the highway – that means that you haven’t actually fulfilled your responsibility to properly secure it.  Fortunately, there are several clues that can help identify if you have not secured your load properly.  Some of these include: You arrive at your destination, and the thing you put on your roof at the start of your journey is no longer there; While driving in your pickup, cars passing you are honking and pointing to your truck bed, because the tarp you used to cover the items you are hauling has turned into a sail and is about to part ways with your truck; Or – as was the case with a recent incident in Mission – you realize that your mattress is not properly secured to your roof, so you (the driver) and your passenger both have to reach up and hold on to it while driving, to try to keep it from flying away.  Not only does doing so mean that your item is not properly secured, but it also means that you are not paying full attention to actually driving. Please ensure all items are properly secured before heading out.
