Nanaimo file # 2025-30840
A local woman is still reeling from the loss of her 55-year-old handcrafted wooden cane. The cane was taken at approximately 2 PM on Tuesday September 23, 2025, at the Woodgrove Centre Mall.
The woman’s husband told police that he and his wife visit the Mall almost every day. On this occasion they decided to sit down for a bit and enjoy a coffee with friends. The cane was left in their shopping cart located just outside the entrance to the business. When they returned it was gone. Security was promptly advised. A short time later they were told that security cameras saw an older woman wearing a red puffy vest and using a walker, pick up the cane from the shopping cart and walk away with it.
The cane had been used by the complainant’s mother for many years and just before her death, she gave it to his wife who has used it for some six years ago. “After speaking with the couple, it was apparent they are very upset as the cane holds significant sentimental value for both. Their only hope is that it was mistakenly picked up and that the cane will be returned to them.” Said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
If anyone has information on the whereabouts of the cane, please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
