“Thank you for being out here” this was the phrase heard over and over again by officers, who were out in force, for the Light up the Night campaign, a national campaign whose singular purpose was to target impaired drivers. The initiative began on Saturday December 6, 2025, and ran to the early morning hours of Sunday December 7, 2025.
By the end of the night, approximately 500 drivers of all ages, were asked the all-important question, “Have you had anything to drink this evening?”
Roadblocks were set up at various locations and multiple demands were issued by officers. Regardless of the time or location, very few drivers were found to be under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. However, two drivers failed a breath demand and were issued with a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRPs), under the Motor Vehicle Act. Of note, two additional 90-day IRPs were issued by front line officers and officers participating in the Bar Watch program.
Various violation tickets were issued for minor infractions. Officers noted that many people to use Ride share services, taxis or a designated driver. “Our officers were pleasantly surprised to see so many sober drivers. Their only hope is that the trend will continue over the holiday season,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
