Discovering a break‑in can be frightening, but taking the right steps can help keep you safe and support any investigation. First, avoid entering the home if you think the intruder may still be inside. From a safe distance—such as your vehicle or a neighbour’s home—call 911 immediately and report what you’ve seen. Do not try to confront anyone or investigate the scene yourself. Until police arrive, keep a careful watch on your house for any movement inside or persons leaving.
If police advise that it’s safe to enter afterward, avoid touching or moving anything, as this can disturb potential evidence. Take note of anything that looks out of place or missing. When officers arrive, they will guide you on the next steps, including securing the property once they’ve completed their assessment.
After the scene is cleared, contact your insurance provider to begin a claim. They will typically ask for the police file number, a list of stolen or damaged items, and photos where appropriate.
Finally, consider improving your home security—better locks, lighting, alarms, cameras, or reinforcing entry points. Break‑ins can be unsettling, so it may also help to speak with family, friends, or support services if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
