Say hello to one of our newest officers, Cst. Mike Lafond, who’s six months into his RCMP career.
Mike originally hails from Winnipeg but made the move to Vancouver Island six years ago. Before joining the RCMP, he spent those years working as a Red Seal electrician, keeping lights on, breakers behaving, and probably explaining more than once that “turning it off and on again” doesn’t fix everything.
His father‑in‑law, a retired Mountie, often encouraged Mike to consider policing. Mike eventually took the leap, wanting to give back to his community and pursue what he sees as a higher calling.
When he’s not on duty, Mike is an avid guitar enthusiast—acoustic, electric, anything with strings. He even played in a band at one point, though we haven’t convinced him to serenade the detachment… yet.
Mike is also a devoted family man, happily married with two young children, including a newborn.
Welcome to the Nanaimo Detachment, Mike! We’re lucky to have you as part of the team.
