Two men doing a random act of kindness for a woman

The Nanaimo RCMP is advising the public that if, at any point during your daily travels, you find yourself the unexpected recipient of a random act of kindness, there is no need to call 911

These acts may consist of but are not limited to the following:

  • Someone paying for your coffee
  • A stranger compliments your pet
  • The person in front of you holds the door open
  • Finding your garbage bins mysteriously placed neatly back where they belong
  • Receiving a cheerful wave from a driver who didn’t almost cut you off on the Parkway

If you have experienced any of these, the Nanaimo RCMP is recommending the following:

1. Remain Calm

It’s normal to feel startled when kindness occurs suddenly. Take a deep breath, stay in the moment

2. Accept the Kindness

If someone buys your coffee, it’s ok to smile and make eye contact.
If someone compliments you, a simple “Thank you” will suffice. No need to apologize.

3. Consider Passing It On

You are under no legal obligation to perform a counter‑kindness, but side effects may include:

  • Increased happiness
  • Sudden urge to smile
  • Something to share on social media
  • Reduced stress

In All Seriousness…The Nanaimo RCMP encourages residents to look out for one another. Small gestures can have a big impact, especially during the long dreary winter months. Your kindness may be the highlight of someone’s day. Don’t forget that-Let’s keep Nanaimo kind, eh! Oh, and Happy Valentines Day.
