Youth arrested, in police custody for alleged shooting

A 17‑year‑old youth has been arrested in connection with an alleged shooting in Nanaimo on February 11, 2026. The 15-year-old victim sustained injuries during the incident and received medical treatment at hospital. He was later released from hospital and is recovering.

On February 13, 2026, officers with the Victoria Police Department (VicPD), supported by the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT), arrested the suspect without incident and transported him to the Victoria Police Department. 

Nanaimo RCMP General Investigation Section completed a Report to Crown Counsel. On February 13, 2026 the BC Prosecutions Service approved 5 charges against the youth:  

  • Discharge a firearm with intent Section 244(1) CC;
  • Aggravated Assault Section 268(2) CC;
  • Assault with a weapon Section 267 Assault CC;
  • Possess a firearm without a license Section 91(1) CC;
  • Possess a firearm while being prohibited Section 117.01(1) CC. 
  • The firearm has not been located and efforts to find it are ongoing.

“This was a significant and concerning incident involving youth violence in our community. The quick response by our officers and with collaboration by VicPD and GVERT, played a crucial role in safely taking the alleged suspect into custody. Our investigators continue to work diligently to find the alleged firearm and to understand all circumstances surrounding this event.” Said Inspector Donovan Tait Operations Officer, Nanaimo RCMP.
