For over seven decades, the RCMP has been woven into the vibrant fabric of Surrey. Generations of employees, along with our community partners, neighbours and residents have helped to shape the legacy of the Surrey RCMP Detachment and I will always hold their contributions in the highest regard. As we are all aware, the Surrey Police Service became the new police of jurisdiction on November 29, 2024 and, at the same time, the Surrey RCMP became the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU), with the mandate to temporarily support police operations in Surrey.
November 29, 2025 will mark the 1-year anniversary of the RCMP SPOSU, and as we enter the second year of this transition, we remain committed to supporting police operations in a thoughtful and responsible manner. The closure of the Surrey RCMP detachment has been a significant change; however, it does not diminish the pride we feel for what we have accomplished throughout the decades.
We recognize the impact this transition has had on our employees as we demobilize. I continue to be inspired by their commitment and dedication during this time of change. Our focus remains providing continuity of police operations as well as steady support for the RCMP members now transferring on to their new roles within the RCMP organization. Each RCMP member is actively informed, and we are working closely with each member to help plan their next steps in their careers. We will continue to manage the remaining transition with care, clarity, public safety and member wellbeing as our key priorities.
Although our chapter of municipal policing in Surrey is closing, the BC RCMP is honoured to have served the residents of Surrey for 74 years. Our history has been built through hard work, commitment and genuine connection to the community. Be it Vaisakhi celebrations to Remembrance Day observances to the Santa Clause parade, we are grateful for our connection to the city, and we remain committed to ensuring our final year of operations reflects the same professionalism and integrity that have defined the Surrey RCMP from its very start.
As we move towards November 2026, we will continue our structured wind-down of RCMP operations in the city. Demobilizing the largest detachment in the country is an extremely complex project and I want to reassure the community as the RCMP winds down our frontline policing presence in Surrey, the BC RCMP will still be leading the BC Extortion Task Force and will remain a part of several specialized, integrated policing teams such as IHIT, LMD ERT, CFSEU-BC, IMPACT, IPDS and others which will continue to work in the city. BC RCMP Headquarters is also located in Surrey and our connection to Surrey will remain strong.
RCMP officers will remain in Guildford and Cloverdale neighbourhoods providing temporary policing supports as the SPS continues to expand its capacity, until our full withdrawal by November 2026.
