BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of an incident in Prince Rupert

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Prince Rupert where one person has died.
On December 19, 2025, at 2:24 p.m., the Prince Rupert RCMP responded to a report of an assault at a residence located in the 500-block of Pillsbury Avenue.
Prince Rupert RCMP arrived on scene and spoke to the complainant before proceeding toward the location of the suspect. Very shortly after making contact with the suspect, an interaction occurred in which a conducted energy weapon was deployed. At some point during the interaction and while police were securing the suspect, the man went unconscious. Police provided immediate medical assistance to the man until paramedics could arrive.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he subsequently died.
No one else sustained injuries as a result of the interaction.
As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
