April marks Auto Crime Enforcement Month, and the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT) is encouraging drivers across British Columbia to take simple steps to reduce the risk of vehicle crime.

Throughout the month, IMPACT officers will be working with police agencies and community partners across the province to increase awareness and educate the public on how to prevent auto theft and theft from vehicles.

Auto crime often occurs when criminals find an easy opportunity. By taking a few preventative steps, drivers can make their vehicles far less appealing targets.

This year’s prevention message encourages drivers to “Think Like a Thief” before leaving their vehicle:

  • T – Take your keys
Never leave keys or key fobs inside your vehicle.
  • H – Hide your valuables
Items left in plain sight can attract thieves. Remove or conceal valuables after you park.
  • I – Inspect before you go
Take a quick look around your vehicle to ensure doors and windows are secure.
  • E – Every lock matters
No matter how short your stop, always lock your vehicle. Including windows and sunroofs.
  • F – Find a well-lit parking spot
Parking in visible, well-lit areas can help deter criminal activity.

“Auto theft is a crime of opportunity,” says Staff Sergeant Greg Yanicki, acting Officer in Charge of IMPACT. “Taking a few seconds to secure your vehicle can make all the difference. We want drivers to think like a thief and ask themselves what might make their vehicle an easy target.”

IMPACT continues to work year-round to prevent auto crime through enforcement, education, and partnerships across British Columbia. Public awareness campaigns and prevention tips are shared regularly through community events and online platforms.
